DANSS was first established in 1998 after a group of Wellington dancers had attended the Gay Games in Amsterdam. Wellington dancer Heta Timu gathered a group of volunteer enthusiasts to share their skills and promote same sex dancing. A fundamental principle of DANSS was that entry was to be by Koha to make it available to all. From 2005 DANSS has been run by a committee and from 2008 an Incorporated Society was established to run competitions.

Hundreds of dancers have discovered the magic of dance during this time. Most just for enjoyment but many going on to dance competitively.
